Yenilikçi, aynı zamanda işlevsel olan özgün çalışmaları ile tanınan ve birçok prestijli ödüle layık görülen Koray Yavuzer Mimarlık ofisi kurucularından Koray Yavuzer ile röportaj gerçekleştirdik.
‘Yüzey’ hem kavramsal hem de mekânı oluşturan yapı bileşenlerden biri olarak mimarlık akımlarında farklı tanımlarıyla tartışmalara konu olmuştur. Sizin mimarlık düşüncenizde ve pratiklerinizde ‘yüzey’ nereye ve nasıl konumlanıyor? ( ‘Surface’ has been the subject of discussions with different definitions in architectural movements, both conceptually and as one of the building components that make up the space. Where and how is the ‘surface’ positioned in your architectural thinking and practices? )
Yüzey, başlıca element diye düşünüyorum. Yani üçüncü boyutun dışında binanın, kütlenin ya da mekânın tasarlandıktan sonra ilk aklımıza gelen kısmı aslında yüzey oluyor; form, kütle ve hacmi tasarladığınız andan başlayarak aslında. Örneğin, buranın yüzeyi bu kaplama olur, dışı bu kaplama olur gibi tasarılar planlıyoruz. Eğer binaysa dış cephe kaplaması, mekânsal açıdan bakarsak iç mekân kurgusunda çok önemli bir element. Ben yüzey kurgusunda şöyle düşünüyorum; oğlumun oynadığı Minecraft adında bir oyun var. Aynı büyüklükte küpler var ama yüzeyleri farklı. Mesela kimi cam, kimi ahşap, kimi taş, kimi tuğla, kimi pamuk… Bütün Minecraft dünyası bu yüzeylerden oluşuyor. Ama o kadar önemli bir şey ki bu. Aslında o yüzeyi farklılıklarıyla oynayarak müthiş mekanlar yaratılıyor. Hakikaten yaşayan mekanlar. Artstone ürünlerin de buna benzetiyorum. Bu yüzey farklılıklarını bize sağlamış olması, kolay taşınabilir olması ve gayet rahat işçilikle uygulanabiliyor olması bize avantaj sağlıyor.

I think the surface is the main element. In other words, the first part that comes to our mind after the design of the building, mass, or space outside the third dimension is the surface; actually starting from the moment you design form, mass and volume. For example, we are planning designs such that the surface is this coating, and the outside is that coating. It is a very important element in exterior and interior design. I think in the surface setup like this; There is a game my son plays called Minecraft. There are cubes of the same size, but with different surfaces. For example, some glass, some wood, some stone, some brick, some cotton… The entire Minecraft world consists of these surfaces. But it’s such an important thing. In fact, amazing spaces are created by playing with the differences of that surface. Truly living spaces. I liken it to Artstone products. The fact that it has provided us with these surface differences is easily portable and can be applied with very comfortable workmanship gives us an advantage.

Mekanların az önce bahsettiğimiz yüzeylerden oluşurken, bu yüzey seçimlerinde doku farklılıkları çok önemli bir rol oynuyor. Örneğin, Dubai’de de bizim çok beğendiğimiz bir Alışveriş merkezi var. Burada yer alan ve yenilenen Fashion Mall mağazasına girdik. Tüm mağaza ve tüm yüzeyler beyaz kumaş kaplı. Beyaz kumaşı o kadar farklı şekillerde kullanmışlar ki, mesela kiminde çok büyük örgü deseni var, kiminde kumaşı daha fazla sıkıştırılarak kullanılmış, kiminde kumaşın bir bölümünde yuvarlak çıkıntılar oluşturulmuş. Aynı kumaşın farklı dokularda kullanılması ya da farklı şekillerde sıkıştırılması veya örülmesi ile oluşan yüzeyler o kadar güzel bir mekân oluşturmuş. O mekanları bölmeden fonksiyonellik kazandırmış. Kimi mücevher kısmında, kimi çanta kısmında, kimi işte kıyafet kısmında…Hakikaten çok güzel bir şekilde birleşmiş aynı ahenk içerisinde. Aynı malzemeyi ve aynı rengi kullansak bile Artstone ürünlerinde farklı kaplama yüzeyleri farklı mekanlarda birbirleri ile uyumlu olacak şekilde kullanıldığı zaman çok güzel bir efekt oluşturuyor. Çok da memnunuz, biz senelerdir çalışıyoruz sizinle.

The texture differences in these surface selections play a very important role, while the spaces consist of the surfaces we have just mentioned. For example, there is a shopping mall in Dubai that we like very much. We entered the renewed Fashion Mall here. The entire store and all surfaces are covered with white fabric. They used the white fabric in so many different ways that for example, some of them have a very large knitting pattern, some of them were used by compressing the fabric more, and some of them formed round protrusions on a part of the fabric. The surfaces formed by using the same fabric in different textures, compressing or knitting in different ways have created such a beautiful space. It added functionality without dividing the spaces. Some in the jewelry section, some in the bag section, some in the clothing section… It’s really beautifully combined in the same harmony. Even if we use the same material and the same color, Artstone products create a very beautiful effect when different coating surfaces are used in harmony with each other in different places. We are very satisfied. We have been working with you for years.

Mekânda derinlik çok önemli, biz bunu önemseyen ve projelerinde sağlayan bir mimarlık ofisiyiz. Bu ofiste de bazı duvarların siyah, bazı yerlerin açık renk olması ve zeminde hiç ahşap kullanmayıp duvarlarda ahşap kullanmış olmamız, bizim bu yüzeysel etkileri çok önemsediğimizi gösteriyor. Biz projelerimizde mutlaka yüzey dediğimiz duvarlarda hatta çoğu zaman tavanda da dahil doku farklılıklarını çok önemsiyoruz. Örneğin, Seba Holding’in genel müdürlük katında farklı bir şey yaptık. Zeminleri mermer yaparken, duvarlarda Artstone kullandık bölücü olarak. Tavanlarda da bu sefer ahşap parkeyi yere döşeme yerine tavanda kullandık. Mesela bu ters yüz etme durumu çok fonksiyonel oldu. Cam ile Artstone ürünü arasında güzel bir aydınlatma yaparak duvarları mücevher değerinde gösterdik.

Depth is very important in space, we are an architectural office that cares about it and provides it in our projects. The fact that some of the walls are black and some of them are light in color and that we do not use any wood on the floor and wood on the walls in this office shows that we attach great importance to these superficial effects. In our projects, we attach great importance to the texture differences on the walls, which we call surfaces, and even on the ceiling most of the time. For example, we did something different on the headquarters floor of Seba Holding. While we made marble floors, we used Artstone on the walls as a divider. We used wooden parquet on the ceiling instead of on the floor. This reversal has been very functional. Because in the office volume, everyone targets the parquet warmth. But in long use, in high traffic, the parquet wears out and people feel uncomfortable with the aging surface. But marble is a material with much longer usage. After we achieved the effect we wanted on the walls with Artstone, we created a very nice effect by using the warmth of the wood on the ceiling, this time with parquet. Thinking of the project as a jewel, we covered the wall surfaces with a clean and thin glass after using Artstone’s white product with elegant textures. We made the walls look like jewels by making beautiful lighting between the glass and the Artstone product.

Bir kere inşaat sürecinde çok büyük kolaylık sağlayan bir ürün. Çünkü kolay taşınabiliyor ve çok kolay bir işçilikle. Tabii ustalık gerektiriyor. Herkesin de yapacağı bir şey değil ama özellikle ek yerlerinin yan yana geldiği zaman fark edilmemesini ve o ek yerlerinin aynı malzemeleri kullanarak hiç hissedilmeyecek halde olmasını sağlamak önemli. Bunlar çoğunlukla Artstone tarafından, bir problem yaşanmadan çözülüyor. İnşa sürecinde binaya ek yük bindirmiyor. Örneğin, kullandığımız taşları ya da malzemeleri gerçekten kullanıyor olsak çok ciddi bir ağırlık getireceğiz binaya. Halbuki öyle bir ağırlığı yok Artstone ürünlerinin. En avantajlı kısımlarından bir tanesi de bu. Binanın statiğine hiç zarar vermeden gayet hafif bir ürün olarak kullanıyorsunuz. Taşıması hafif, işçiliği kolay. It is a product that provides great convenience in the construction process. Because it can be carried easily and with a very easy workmanship. Of course, it takes skill. It is not something that everyone can do, but it is important to ensure that the joints are not noticed when they come together, and that those joints are not felt at all by using the same materials. These are mostly fixed by Artstone without any problems. It does not impose an additional load on the building during the construction process. For example, if we really use the stones or materials we use, we will bring a serious weight to the building. However, Artstone products do not have such a weight. This is one of the most advantageous parts. You use it as a very light product without harming the static of the building. It is light to carry, easy to work with. As a customer, you can provide the depth you want. The only thing I will criticize is that it should be used in moderation. It is easy for our interior architect friends. It is truly a beautiful product. Although it is a very good thing, you actually depreciate the value of this product when you use it everywhere. Instead, we actually use that marble. If we want another effect or something with a more matte texture, then we prefer Artstone. When cooking, for example, you want to add spice. That’s how I see Artstone. But if it is too spicy, this time it becomes bitter and inedible. Instead, it finds its place very well when you use it in a really limited and full consistency. It gives much better results.
Gerek proje yatırımcılarından gerekse mekânın kullanıcılarından ne yönde geri bildirimler alıyorsunuz? ( What kind of feedback do you get from both the project investors and the users of the space? )
İnsanlar tabi çıkan sonuca bakıyor. Müşteri bu derinlikte yapılan ve demin anlattığım kıvamı da doğru oranda kullanılan bir mekân tasarımından çok memnun kalıyor.’’ İyi ki bu malzemeyi seçmişiz, çok güzel. Benim de başka bir yerde ofisim var. Acaba orada da böyle bir kaplama yapsak mı? ‘’ gibi çok güzel geri dönüşler alıyoruz.

Tabii her zaman. En başından beri beraberiz zaten. Yeni malzemeler çıkmasından keyif alıyoruz. Yeni ürün çıktıkça da kullanmaya devam edeceğiz. En son yaptığımız projede, geçen sene çıkan bir ürünü var; betonun içinden paslı demirleri gözüküyor, onu tercih ettik. Bu ürünü yaptığımız projede bir bodrum katta kullandık. Sinema odası girişi ve hobi odası çevresinde yine demin söylediğim gibi ölçülü oranda kullandık ve başka malzemelerle birleşince inanın çok daha iyi, çok daha kaliteli bir efekt alıyorsunuz. Yani her yerin Artstone olması değil, belli duvarların Artstone olması ve derinlik hedeflediğiniz yerlerde bunu kullanıp bazı yerlerde de farklı malzemeler kullanılması çok güzel sonuç veriyor.
Bu arada en beğendiğim ürün aslında Beyaz Tuğla duvardır, Artstone’un ürünleri içerisinde. Benim ofisimde de görüyorsunuz onlardan kullandık. Aslında yeni ürüne de ihtiyaç yok. Yeni, farklı bir ürün çıktıkça hoşumuza gidiyor. ‘’Bak bu burada olur, şurada perde duvarımız var burada kullanabiliriz.’’ Ama genel olarak hep şunu tercih ediyoruz. O ürünün gerçeğinin de kullanılabileceği ya da bulunabileceği yere onu yapalım.

Of course always. We’ve been together since the very beginning. We enjoy the release of new materials. We will continue to use them as new products come out. In our latest project, there is a product that was released last year; rusty irons are visible through the concrete, we preferred it. We used this product on a basement floor in our project. As I said before, we used it in moderation around the entrance of the cinema room and the hobby room, and when combined with other materials, you get a much better, much higher quality effect. In other words, it is not just Artstone everywhere, but Artstone on certain walls and using it in places where you aim for depth and using different materials in some places gives very good results. By the way, my favorite product is actually the White Brick wall, among Artstone’s products. You can see in my office, we used them. Actually, there is no need for a new product, but we like it when a new and different product comes out. “Look, this is here, we have a curtain wall here, we can use it there.” But in general, we always prefer this. Let’s make it where the real of that product can also be used or found.
